When thinking about infotainment often shows like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show come to mind. Prototypes of their respective genre, these two news-entertainment sources provide viewers with a lighter version of the sober news traditionally associated with mainstream journalism, both broadcast and print. Whether it is politics, economics, or celebrity news, Colbert and Stewart always manage to have something witty to say to the American public. However, what about urban journalism? Where does it fit under the umbrella of such soft news? Considering the scope of infotainment it appears that mediums such as The Source, Vibe and XXL magazine may not be complete islands unto themselves. Primarily rooted in urban fashion, hip-hop music, and hip-hop celebrity news, urban journalism seems to add a funky nuance to the larger journalistic discourse. Supplying readers with in depth stories such as Kanye West Reacts To Alleged Rihanna/Chris Brown Incident, “It Should Never [Have] Come To That” , iAuto-Tunes , and Lil Kim Joins Cast of “Dancing With The Stars”urban journalism confronts hard news creatively, and provides a distinctive cultural context. Such an angle is missing from The Colbert Report and The Daily Show which to me represents generic America, very amorphous and blanketed in star-spangled patriotism.

I respectfully disagree. I do not think you can consider “kanye west reacts to alleged Rihanna/Chris Brown incident” or “lil kim joins dancing with the stars” as an “in depth” news story. All the stories listed are NO where near what is considered hard news. I like the idea of bringing a distinctive cultural context to different news reports, but, I’m afraid none of those stories listed do that. Those are stories you would find on infotainment like Entertainment tonight, which in my opinion, should not even be considered news. The Daily Show and Colbert Report are actually discussing “hard” political news, they just happen to add a few more laughs than your typical news station. By no means do the Daily show and Colbert Report “represent “generic america” either. If anything, these guys are critical of our political system. Furthermore, they are not covered in “blanketed star-spangled patriotism.” They just spent the past 8 years criticizing the Bush administration and our democracy!! Also, tell me if I’m wrong, but amorphous means being without character or nature, right? You REALLY think the Daily Show and Colbert Report do not have character or nature. No offense, but with that sort of comment, I have to assume you’ve never actually seen these shows. There are no two other shows on television that have as much character as the Daily Show and Colbert Report. I think you need to reevaluate you definition of hard news as well as watch a couple episodes of the Daily Show. I do respect your opinions and please don’t take my strong opinions personally.
